How does galvanized and non-galvanized winch cable differ?
Our aircraft grade galvanized winch cable is essentially the same winch cable that is used on all well-known winch brands. The galvanizing process makes it more corrosion resistant, but also makes the wire rope stiffer, noticeable when winding on the drum.
The aircraft grade non-galvanized cable does not have the corrosion resistance of the galvanized. With correct regular maintenance however (all wire rope should be regularly cleaned with kerosene), this should not be a problem. On the plus side, non-galvanized wire rope is more flexible, and so is easier to wind on the drum. Its wire strands are slightly thinner, there are more of them, and thus makes for a slightly stronger product - see strength ratings below.
We have found that, by and large, choosing between galvanized and non-galvanized is very much a personal preference. Differences in performance are minimal.
Note: We recommend keeping a minimum of 5 wraps of winch line on the winch drum at all times.
